What is Sled Hockey?
Sled hockey is played like traditional hockey on a standard rink. Players sit in specially designed sleds that rest on skate blades. They use two short hockey sticks with blades on one end to control the puck and metal picks on the other end to propel themselves across the ice.
The game is very similar to traditional hockey with six players on a team, including the goalie. The goals are regulation sized and three fifteen-minute periods are played. It is fun and energetic at every level; fast-paced and physical at the highest levels.
History of Sled Hockey
In 1971, enthusiastic Norwegian hockey fans developed sled hockey to meet the special recreational, emotional and physical needs of disabled children and adults.
The game came to Minnesota in 1989 and has grown quickly across the United States. Colorado started its first club in 1995. Today, 10 NHL franchises sponsor local sled hockey programs, with more being developed.
